Man shot by Mountlake Terrace homeowner still in intensive care

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — An alleged burglar who was shot by a homeowner in Mountlake Terrace in August remains in intensive care.

Said B. Osman, a 27-year-old Seattle man, is still on a ventilator at Harborview Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing, Mountlake Terrace police Cmdr. Doug Hansen said Tuesday. The homeowner, 57, has not been arrested.

Detectives are hoping to conduct additional interviews, Hansen said. Osman is believed to be the boyfriend of the homeowner’s 19-year-old niece, Jessica Bride.

The couple reportedly showed up at the man’s house in the early hours of Aug. 31 with a plan to rob him. They allegedly walked in through a door that had been left open because of the heat. The man told police he and Bride are related through marriage and that he had rarely seen her before then.

The couple asked him to open his gun safe so they could purchase a firearm from him, he told police. He said he asked them to leave and gave them some quarters to buy gas.

The situation made the man uncomfortable, and he retrieved his 9mm pistol for protection, according to court papers. Several hours later, Bride was back at his door. While he spoke to her, he heard a noise in his bedroom.

Prosecutors allege that Osman was climbing in through a window and was standing on a nightstand “slightly tangled in the blinds.” The homeowner shot Osman in the chest and called 911. Osman ran and collapsed in the roadway. He allegedly was holding what was described in court papers as “a crochet needle or a boot hook.”

Neighbors said they saw Bride running away.

Bride was arrested later that night. She has since pleaded guilty to burglary and has served her month-long sentence. She was given a shorter than usual sentence for being a first-time offender, court papers show.

Public records show she was booked into the King County Jail earlier this week. The Department of Corrections alleged that she violated the terms of her community supervision.

Bride reportedly told detectives that she and Osman had hoped her uncle would be asleep when they came back for the guns. Osman has not been charged in connection with the burglary while detectives continue to gather information.
