CLINTON — Fire destroyed a Clinton home on Sunday afternoon and sent a man to the hospital.
The man was working on his car in the carport of his Whidbey Island home when a fire sparked up and burned his legs.
The man and his family fled their house in the 2000 block of Homestead Avenue. The fire quickly spread from the carport to engulf the home and garage. The man was transported to a hospital. His injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, South Whidbey Fire Chief Rusty Palmer said.
Firefighters arrived shortly before 1 p.m. as thick, gray plumes of smoke rose from the house’s roof. Twenty-three firefighters worked into the evening to extinguish the fire.
The single-story house was destroyed. Damage was estimated at $280,000, Palmer said. None of the buildings surrounding the house was damaged.
