MARYSVILLE — A Lynnwood man was tackled and trussed up in zip ties late last week after workers reportedly spotted him at the base of a cellphone tower near a backpack filled with copper wire.
The man, 28, was lying on the ground, his hands and feet restrained with zip ties, when Marysville police officers arrived Thursday afternoon in the 3900 block of 88th Street NE.
The workers told police that their nearby business had been plagued by recent burglaries. They were checking the perimeter just before 4 p.m. when they noticed that a gate for the enclosure at the base of an AT&T cellphone tower had been forced open.
When they checked inside, they spotted a backpack filled with wire and a man climbing over the fence.
They gave chase, yelling at the man to stop. Another man heard the commotion, realized what was happening and tackled the running man.
When the officer checked at the cellphone tower, he spotted the backpack and obvious damage to electrical equipment that a phone company representative said could “easily be several thousand dollars,” according to a police report.
The suspect didn’t deny involvement. He told officers that he’d earlier met a man at a nearby department store who asked him if he wanted to make some money. They came to the cellphone tower to get wire.
The man was booked into jail for investigation of second-degree burglary, malicious mischief and defrauding a public utility.
