LAKE STEVENS — A passerby spotted a fire in the public area of the U.S. Post Office here late Thursday. Lake Stevens firefighters were able to contain it promptly, but there was smoke damage to other areas of the building.
The flames in the postal-box area of the building, on Main Street at 1709 124th Ave. NE, were reported at 10:27 p.m., Assistant Fire Marshal David Petersen said. Firefighters arrived three minutes later. The fire was contained to that area but there was moderate smoke damage to the building, he said.
No one was injured.
The case is under investigation by Lake Stevens police, the fire marshals of Lake Stevens and Snohomish County, a Post Master General investigator and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The Postal Service is evaluating damage to mail, Petersen said.
