TULALIP — As they tried to track down a missing Everett man Sunday, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue unit discovered skeletal human remains unrelated to his disappearance.
The remains were recovered from a wooded area in the 9900 block of 27th Ave NE, the sheriff’s office reported Monday.
Detectives believe the remains to be several years old.
Identification of the deceased is pending from the Snohomish County Medical Examiner, who also will determine the cause and manner of death.
Searchers had been looking for clues into the disappearance of Jacob Hilkin, 24, who went missing Jan. 23. They scoured 700 acres in Tulalip. About 100 people joined the search-and-rescue effort.
The full-scale search for Hilkin was the first organized by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. It included volunteers from King, Kitsap, Mason and Pierce counties, Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue, Everett Mountain Rescue and the Tulalip Police Department.
The night before Hilkin disappeared, he went to the Quil Ceda Creek Casino with two friends. Eventually, he told a friend he would take a bus home.
