Fold: Paper cranes for Day of Peace

Staff, patrons and other volunteers at Everett Public Library are folding origami cranes to display for the International Day of Peace. Special “fold-in” parties are set for 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave., and the Evergreen Branch, 9512 Evergreen Way. That’s also the date of the United Nations celebration.

If you want to start folding early, instructions and paper can be found at both library locations.

Churn: Pretend to be a pioneer

Learn about life in the Pioneer Days, 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 at Pioneer Hall, 20722 67th Ave. NE, Arlington. The kid-friendly activities include such chores as milking a cow, washing clothes, churning butter, sawing logs and spinning yarn.

The event is free, but entry to the Stillaguamish Valley Pioneers Museum on the same site is at regular admission.

Explore: Free passes for fourth-graders

Fourth-graders and their families can claim their free Every Kid in a Park pass, which allows free entry into all federal parks, forests and recreation areas for a full year.

Paper vouchers are available at www.everykidinapark.gov and can be redeemed for a plastic pass at any Forest Service office. The voucher and passes are valid through Aug. 31, 2017.

By targeting fourth-graders, the program works to ensure every child in the United States has the opportunity to visit and enjoy their public lands by the time he or she is 11 years old.

Fly: Kite festival on Whidbey

The Whidbey Island Kite Festival will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Camp Casey in Coupeville.

Events include single-line challenges, sportkite competitions, demonstrations, lessons, a mass ascension and kids activities, including kite-making. An indoor kite-flying event is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Coupeville High School.

Festival admission is free. A $1 donation for parking is at the Coupeville Boys & Girls Club.

Investigate: The world of autopsies

Forensic pathologist Dr. Carl Wigren takes you deep into the world of autopsies and crime scenes with a humorous and frank presentation, “Autopsies: Forensic Pathology and the Real World of CSI,” 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Everett Public Library auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave.

Nosh: Small bites of history and food

A Norway-themed History and Hors d’oeuvres night is set for 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the Stanwood Area Historical Society, 27108 102nd Ave. NW. There will be Norwegian refreshments to enjoy while hearing Norwegian pioneer family histories and short presentations about the Norwegian influence on Stanwood and vicinity.

The program is preceded by an open house, 1-4 p.m., to tour new and updated exhibits at the history museum, research library and D.O. Pearson House.
