School Winners

Local teens head to state Mock Trial

King’s High School’s varsity Mock Trial team placed first in the Snohomish County District competition. Archbishop Murphy High School placed second. The teams head this weekend to Olympia for state competition.

King’s student Josie Culp of Woodway and Murphy student Zane Carlton of Snohomish tied for first place for Outstanding Attorney.

Other local King’s team members: Devon Fleming of Woodway, Karl Kleppe of Bothell, Kendall Walsh of Edmonds, Nick Grimm of Edmonds, Peter Kulitz of Everett, Isabel Sanchez of Edmonds, Matthew Melchisedeck of Mukilteo, Jack Zhou of Edmonds, and Jun Hwang of Edmonds.

Other Murphy team members: Marissa Baer of Everett, Austin Bailey of Edmonds, Zane Carlton of Snohomish, Katie Darst of Bothell, Alisa Das of Everett, AJ de Leon of Snohomish, Lucas Dini of Edmonds, Lola Forde of Clinton, Ashley Halmans of Monroe, Samantha Ligman of Snohomish, Hillary Longoria of Snohomish, Hannah Lukomski of Everett, Clare Lyons of Freeland, Esha Nath of Edmonds, and Alexi Obillo of Mukilteo.

In addition, Gideon Watson of Lake Stevens, from Murphy’s freshman team, was named the district meet’s Outstanding Witness.

Archbishop Murphy teens help in Guatemala

Fifteen Archbishop Murphy High School students spent their mid-winter break Feb. 11-17 serving those in need in Guatemala through the school’s annual service-learning trip.

The teens made picnic benches at a high school, where peers often must walk up to two hours to get to the campus. They also spent two days building a play set, then coordinating a race and handing out food at a grade school, as well as giving Spanish-language lessons about Pacific Northwest climate and animals.

Lake Stevens robotics teams head to worlds

Cavelero Mid High School in Lake Stevens hosted the All-Washington High School VEX Robotics Championship on March 5.

The 5 Guys Team 8931A from Lake Stevens High School earlier won the first-place EMC Website Design Award, a national honor that earns them a spot at the VEX Robotics World Championships, to be held April 20-24 in Louisville, Kentucky. The team is made up of juniors Aiden Pyle, Ryan Sobosky, Andrew Deebach, Jordan Conner and Skyler Bagher.

Also heading to the World Championships after winning a state Design Award is Trifecta Team 8931B from Lake Stevens High. Team members are Jonah Hanson, Alexis Hepburn, Abby Hanson and Eli McCoy.

A Redmond team was the overall state champion.

Career-tech teens receive recognition

The Alderwood-Terrace Rotary Club sponsors the Career and Technical Education Student of the Month program at Lynnwood High School. Recent honorees were senior Naomi Stazel (journalism) and junior Jaqueline Flores-Barranco (business).

Meanwhile, Mountlake Terrace High School special education teachers Stephanie Wittenbrink and Antoaneta Beeston were named the club’s Educators of the Month.
