LYNNWOOD — Attention disabled veterans. You may not be getting all the help you qualify for.
Members of the Disabled American Veterans Snohomish County Chapter #13 are trying to get the word out. People may think they have officially registered with the nonprofit group. A glitch may be preventing them from getting mail and other contacts from the organization to help them with benefits and other issues.
There’s an estimated 6,500 disabled veterans in Snohomish County who the group would like to contact. “They became members, they want our help, but we don’t know how to reach them,” said Gregg Michael, commander of the local Disabled American Veterans chapter.
The problem arose as people signed up for the organization either by mail or online, he said. The way to know if there’s a problem is if they received a membership card with the number 46011 on it. That’s an at-large designation in Washington, he said. It doesn’t connect the member with the Snohomish County Chapter. To do so, the number on the card should say 46013.
A card can be reissued with that number. That will help assure they’re receiving proper compensation and assistance, he said.
“I’m getting lots of phone calls saying ‘I signed up but I don’t know what to do,’ ” Michael said. “I had 15 calls in one day.”
Disabled veterans may call the chapter at 425-299-3373 for assistance.
The local chapter is one of the most active in the state, he said. It meets monthly at the Lynnwood Eagles Hall. Volunteers spread out around the county to assist disabled veterans, he said.
“It’s all to help our brother and sister vets,” Michael said.
