Can’t blame only ‘illegals’ for gang activity

I was reading the paper recently (as I do every morning) when a letter regarding gang violence in the Casino Road neighborhood caught my eye.

And it made me ill.

Here is a letter from a person who has decided that all gang activity on Casino Road is the result of “illegals.” How does she know that? I hardly think our own citizens, American-born and raised, are somehow beneath joining a gang on Casino Road or elsewhere. I am absolutely stunned and amazed that someone would actually put that kind of prejudice in writing!

Gang activity, while certainly prevalent on Casino Road is not exclusive to that neighborhood. Nor are all gangs made up of “illegals.” Gangs are bad news, to be sure; they are also made up of all nationalities, all colors; maybe even that teenager who may live next door to letter writer.
