My nieces have had many fun and educational experiences at the Imagine Children’s Museum in Everett. Wouldn’t it be great if children all over the world could play with the wooden trains or set up a series of water flow pipes? Unfortunately as many as 263 million children do not have the opportunity to go to school at all. The Global Partnership for Education is working to rectify that. They have a plan to get hundreds of millions of children a quality education by 2020.
There are places in the world where a young woman is more likely to die in childbirth than to graduate high school. Girls who don’t go to school are three times more likely to be infected with HIV. Young women who remain in school have more choices and greater independence. That is the future I want for the young women in my life and all over the world.
The United States has made increasing investments in the Global Partnership for Education since 2011. I hope that Washington’s Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell will work to continue funding the GPE. Let’s show the world that global education is a priority for the United States.
