Let’s attack the minimum wage this way: Our courts have long protected citizens by outlawing or restricting dangerous products and practices. My not-so-silly question is: Are low wages dangerous? Are they a sinister threat, especially to our young and handicapped?
Must youth be spared the danger, indignity and suffering of low wages? Government come to the rescue!
No need to worry! It has declared those despicable practices absolutely, totally illegal long ago! What luck! Phew! We breathe so much easier finding out!
The much higher minimum wages — on the other hand — are available for everybody! Unemployed youth may join the competition. Are they able to?
Will employers attempt the gamble of hiring over-paid, inexperienced, poorly educated job seekers among a plethora of choices? Why take the risk? Laying off the unqualified might even offend some random bureaucrat with authority to stop it!
Price control is an outdated, evil socialist idea. Minimum wage is price control! Socialist Scandinavia is surprising the rest of the world — me included — by rejecting it!
U.S. unemployment and minimum wages are wedded in an unholy union. How long will young Americans be forced to suffer the consequences?
