Privatizing BPA power system bad bet for salmon

Among the many radical elements found in its recently released budget, the Trump Administration has proposed selling off and privatizing the Bonneville Power Administration’s transmission assets. The Save Our wild Salmon Coalition (SOS) stands with The Herald editorial board — and the vast majority of our region — to oppose this short-sighted initiative (“Sale of BPA lines would bring higher power bills,” May 31).

While salmon and fishing advocates have serious disagreements with BPA over their costly and ineffective strategies for protecting wild salmon and steelhead populations endangered by the federal system of dams and reservoirs on the Columbia and Snake rivers, we recognize its unique role and tremendous value to Northwest communities and our economy.

SOS will persist in our work to hold Bonneville and other agencies accountable to federal laws and the interests of Northwest people. We will continue our work with diverse partners to insist that BPA live up to its responsibilities to protect and restore salmon harmed by the federal hydropower system. And we believe that a publicly-owned, publicly-accountable power marketing agency like BPA will over time benefit our region and the public interest far more reliably than an energy system that has been cut loose and privatized by this administration.
