Shortly before the Republicans won control of the House in 2010 elections, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” Since that time it is clear that most Republicans in the House and Senate support this effort. They have worked very hard to thwart President Obama at every turn, even when it is detrimental to the country. But this has not been their highest priority. Events over the last two years make it obvious that the number-one goal of the Republicans in Congress is to preserve the “Bush tax cuts” for high-income people.
Many wealthy people get their income from investments or similar sources which are treated as long term capital gains. This income is taxed at 15 percent, which is why Mitt Romney makes millions per year yet pays a lower effective tax rate than many working class families. While these working families received small tax reductions from the Bush tax cuts, many high income people got a one-quarter reduction in their taxes. It is no wonder the wealthy feel so strongly about keeping their tax cuts.
So Republicans fight to keep all the tax cuts and loopholes for high income people, and many of these people reciprocate by making big contributions to Republican re-election campaigns. The Republicans win, the wealthy win, and the rest of us lose. Remember this when you vote.
