On April 1, a cute little cafe called Ellie’s will be closing its doors after many years serving the people and friends they have made for the past eights years and before the present owners, starting out as a Drive-in Cafe, way back when Smokey Point was just that, a point on the map with a bar that had barbecue that caused the smoke.
After several owners and several additions to the log cabin beginning, Ellie’s is a bustling cafe serving breakfast and lunch to many locals and people from over 20 miles away. It has been a friendly place to meet and eat with ease of entry; many a wheelchair has entered to eat with friends and family.
Most any day you will see tables being pulled together to accommodate a large group. There are times when local police will meet for lunch and conversation. At times the Army khaki will be seated next to you with the National Guard facility near by. The mayor of Arlington has made her way to this Hide Away Cafe in the past.
I think there is a human interest story here for one of your reporters as Ellie’s is closing to make way for a beauty parlor, a sad day for many of us who have come to love Ellie’s. I have talked with many who are asking where do I go now and how much they will miss Ellie’s.
The head cook Connie had her own cafe at the stock yards sales barn just two miles down State Street when I first moved to this area. When it closed she came to work for Linda and then Cy and has been part of the glue that has held cafe together.
At 82, I have lost many of my friends and family and now will be losing another friend, Ellie’s Cafe
