A Friday letter argues the AR-15 assault rifle is a tool and when that tool is used in summary executions, the tool user should be blamed. I agree; however, the writer fails to address keeping that tool from such users. He also fails to state why mass shootings are acceptable. I say they are not.
Our individual right to keep and bear arms is predicated upon the need for a well-regulated militia. Such need is now satisfied by sworn law-enforcement officers and by the National Guard. Individual citizens do not “need” assault weapons.
The letter writer touts AR-15 use “for target practice, shooting competitions, hunting, and self-defense.” Like many combat vets, I can do all of that without owning a military-grade assault weapon.
