I read in the Wednesday paper that the Senate approved a bill suspending Initiative 960’s requirement that new taxes be approved by two-thirds majority in each chamber of the Legislature or a vote of the people.
This was passed by a vote of 26 to 23. The people of Washington passed this initiative to make sure that our taxes would not increase unless a supermajority of the Legislature wanted to raise our taxes. It seems to me that no matter what the people of the state of Washington want and approve, the Legislature can just come back and disregard the will of the people. So why do we even bother with initiatives when the Legislature can just throw it out like it never happened?
