KENNEWICK — Overtime has not been the Everett Silvertips’ friend this season.
Everett dropped yet another game in the extra period Saturday night, falling 3-2 to the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League action.
The Tips still earned a point by getting the game into overtime. However, Phil Tot scored with 30.3 seconds remaining in the extra period to give Tri-City the full two points. Everett is now 3-6 in overtime games this season.
Brian Williams and Braden Purtill scored during regulation for Tri-City (20-20-2-2), which avenged a 6-3 loss in Everett the previous night. Purtill’s goal came with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to get the game into overtime.
Eric Comrie made 35 saves to earn the win in goal for the Americans.
Ivan Nikolishin and Patrick Bajkov scored for Everett (24-13-6-1). Austin Lotz made 29 saves in net for the Tips.
It looked as though Everett had won it when the Tips broke a 1-1 tie with 4 minutes, 57 seconds remaining in regulation. Remi Laurencelle used a burst of speed to split the defense, then set up Bajkov on the doorstep to give Everett the lead.
But Tri-City tied the game 2:38 later. Purtill used his speed to get around the defense, then beat Lotz with a backhander to force OT.
Tot then gave the Americans the win. With time winding down and a shootout looming, Tot was able to get his wraparound chance past Lotz to end it.
The first period was a complete reversal from when the teams played the night before. Everett outshot Tri-City 40-15 Friday, but the Americans controlled the first period Saturday, outshooting the Tips 12-4, and Tri-City took the lead at 9;07 as Williams put a shot past Lotz from a tight angle.
Everett turned the momentum in its favor in the second period, outshooting Tri-City 19-10, and the Tips tied the game on the power play at 12:40. A move in transition involving Jujhar Khaira and Carson Stadnyk set up Nikolishin for the goal, sending the game into the third period tied 1-1.
