VANCOUVER, B.C. — It took a week, but the Everett AquaSox finally have a post All-Star Game victory.
Everett won for the first time since last week’s Northwest League All-Star Game as they defeated the Vancouver Canadians 5-3 Tuesday night.
The Sox came out of the All-Star break by getting swept in a five-game series at Salem-Keizer. But Everett built a five-run lead, then held the Canadians off down the stretch.
Everett (9-10 second half, 32-25 overall) received big games from Austin Wilson and Justin Seager to end its six-game losing streak. Wilson went 3-for-4 with a home run, while Seager followed up a four-hit performance Monday by going 3-for-4.
Starting pitcher Tommy Burns earned the win, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Burns struggled with his control, walking six, but benefitted by a strong defensive performance behind him. The Sox turned double plays to end the first three innings, and shortstop Jack Reinheimer made several sterling plays.
Min-Sih Chen struck out three in the ninth to pick up his first save.
Chaz Frank scored two runs and L.B Dantzler drove in two to pace Vancouver (8-11, 30-27).
Everett opened the scoring in the top of the fourth thanks to a blast by Wilson. With two out Wilson ripped a liner over the fence in left for a two-run homer, giving the Sox a 2-0 lead.
The Sox then broke the game open in the fifth, with all the damage again coming with two out. With the bases loaded, Chantz Mack singled to center to drive home two runs. Then after a pitching change, Carlton Tanabe greeted reliever Alonzo Gonzalez with an RBI single to center, giving Everett a 5-0 lead.
Vancouver threatened all night, but was stymied by Everett’s defense until the Canadians got on the board in the sixth on Dantzler’s two-run double to right-center, making it 5-2. Chaz Frank came home on an error in the eighth as the Canadians pulled within two, but that was all Vancouver could muster.
