EVERETT — The Tri-City Dust Devils moved into sole possession of first place as they came from behind to defeat the Everett AquaSox 6-5 Wednesday before 2,703 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Dust Devils (17-16) erased a four-run deficit with five runs in the sixth against Everett relievers Lane Ratliff and Marvin Gorgas. The big blow was a grand slam by Taylor Kohlwey on the first pitch he saw from Gorgas that gave Tri-City a 6-5 lead it didn’t relinquish.
The Frogs (16-17) had built an early 4-0 lead. Kristian Brito drove in Donnie Walton with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead in the first and Jose Leal had an RBI triple and Bryson Brigman had an RBI single in the second. Nick Thurman’s solo home run in the third pushed the lead to 4-0.
Everett starter Brandon Miller scattered four hits and allowed one run in five innings. The sole blemish came on Buddy Reed’s sacrifice fly that drove in Nate Easley to cut Everett’s lead to 4-1 in the fifth.
The Frogs got the run back in the fifth when Walton walked and scored on Brito’s second RBI single of the night.
Everett begins a five-game road trip at Salem-Keizer at 6:35 p.m. Thursday. Ljay Newsome (3-1, 3.72 ERA) will pitch for Everett against S-K’s Victor Concepcion (2-4, 5.47).
