The snowstorm that paralyzed most of the Puget Sound region this week wiped out all of the high school sports events, making the race to the finish for winter teams more grueling than anyone could have expected.
More than a 100 games, matches and meets from Tuesday to Friday were scratched because of the snow and even a few makeup games slated for today had already been postponed when The Herald went to press Friday night, including a big Wesco 4A girls basketball matchup between first-place teams Jackson and Lake Stevens.
For most boys and girls basketball teams, missing this week’s slate of games means they will have to fit six games into two weeks before district tournaments begin Feb. 7. The one saving grace is that they are not alone as most teams they’ll face are in the same situation.
Most of the canceled events have been rescheduled, but a number of athletic directors are waiting for the snow to clear before starting to reschedule events. Most of the events have been rescheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Saturday next week.
All boys and girls basketball games must be made up by Feb. 4.
Wesco 4A and 3A district tournaments begin Friday, Feb. 3, and the Wesco boys swim and dive district tournaments begin Friday, Feb. 10.
