Community Roundup: Snohomish grad earns Pac-12 honors

Washington State University outfielder Derek Jones was named last week to the 2012 All-Pac-12 Conference Baseball Team.

Jones, a senior from Snohomish, led the Cougars in batting with a .335 average. He ranked second on the team in home runs (nine) and runs batted in (45).

Jones finished his career in Pullman as WSU’s all-time leader in home runs (41). He also ranks in the school’s all-time top 10 in total bases (third), RBI (fifth), games played (seventh), runs (ninth) and hits (10th).

Jones was a 13th-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in last year’s major-league draft and is expected to be selected again this year.

Softball

Saint Martin’s University senior utility player Morgan Klemm has been named to the 2012 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-West Region second team.

Klemm, a graduate of Cascade High School, hit .427 this spring, the second-best average in the seven-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Her banner season was the result of changes Klemm made to her swing, Saints coach Rick Noren said on the school’s website.

“Last year, there were some mechanical things I thought we needed to change,” Noren said of Klemm, who batted just .239 as a junior. “To her credit, she really worked hard on following what we asked her to do.”

Klemm was one of two Saint Martin’s players from Snohomish County named to the All-GNAC first team. She was joined on the squad by fellow Cascade alum Sam Munger, a freshman shortstop. Munger hit .411 this spring.

Track and Field

• Everett Community College’s Janell Alyea won the discus and teammate Kaitlin Fisher placed first in the 800-meter run at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Track and Field Championships held last month at Spokane Falls Community College.

Alyea, a sophomore from Everett, set a school record with her discus throw of 142 feet, 8 inches. She also placed third in the hammer throw, earning All-America honors in both events.

Fisher, a freshman from Woodinville, won the 800 in a time of 2 minutes, 17.73 seconds.

The Everett women placed fifth among the 10 teams at the meet with 74 points. The Everett men placed fourth among 11 teams with 53 points. The team finishes were the best by the Trojans in 25 years, Everett coach Matt Koenigs said.

• Alex Harrison of Western Washington University was named a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American following his performance at the recent NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.

Harrison, a graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, placed seventh in the decathlon with 6,677 points, 95 points shy of his school record of 6,772.

A senior, Harrison was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference decathlon champion this spring.

Volleyball

The Lake Stevens-based Lake Volleyball Club’s U-13 Blue team capped its season by winning its division at last month’s Northwest Juniors Memorial Day Classic. The tournament was held May 26-27 at Edmonds Community College and Inglemoor High School.

The Lake VBC team lost only one match en route to the championship contest, where it defeated Umpqua VBC 25-20, 23-25, 22-20.

For the tournament, Gabby Gunterman and Julia Mott led Lake VBC in kills with 30 and 29, respectively. Melissa Stevens had 39 assists and Laura Aikins added 35. Ryann Rasmussen led the team in digs with 29.

Other members of the Lake VBC team included Jaime Cymbaluk, Jenna McNeil, Bailey Nelson, Hannah Barnes, Juliana Cameron, Brooke Lowery and Robin Meador.
