Fastpitch team qualifies for ASA nationals

The Patriots ‘98-Calhoun 14U fastpitch softball team, with a roster of girls from around Snohomish and north King counties, won 10 straight loser-out games to capture the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) state tournament July 5-7 in Pasco.

The Patriots defeated a Snohomish County rival, the Lake Breeze, 7-3 and 14-2 in consecutive games to win the title.

With the victory, the Patriots qualified for the ASA national tournament July 26-Aug. 4 in Normal, Ill.

The team’s roster includes Gabby Calhoun (Mountlake Terrace High School), Sydney Taggart (Everett), Gabby Kohler (Everett), Whitney Harris (Cascade), Sophie Swain (Inglemoor), Maya Shipway (Bear Creek School), Ashley Fitzgerald (Mountlake Terrace), Kelsey Bechtoldt (Granite Falls), Meagan Marino (Bothell), Talia Starr (Juanita), Kristin Scott (Jackson) and Paige Grover (Woodinville).

The coaches are Norm Calhoun, Jeff Fitzgerald and John Grover.

Rollergirls to playoffs

The Jet City Rollergirls roller derby team qualified for the Aug. 16-18 Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Division 2 playoffs in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Rollergirls, who are based in Everett, advance as the No. 5 seed among 10 teams. The seedings were based on WFTDA-sanctioned bouts through June 30.

Jet City will be vying for a top-two finish to advance to the WFTDA national finals in November. A second Division 2 tournament will be held in Kalamazoo, Mich., and will also send two teams to the four-team national finals in Milwaukee, Wis.

Golfer Caparas defends title

Rudy Caparas defended his title as the Greater Snohomish County Junior Champion with rounds of 72 and 71 to win the July 9-10 tournament at Everett’s Legion Memorial (first round) and Walter Hall (second round) golf courses.

Playing from the blue tees, Caparas’ 36-hole total was 10 strokes better than runner-up Steven Cabanday.

The white tee winner was Quinton Borseth, who had rounds of 77-79 to finish six strokes ahead of 2012 champ Sarah Lawrence.

The red tee winner was Josh Selby, who shot 84-89 and was one stroke ahead of Connor Bugni.

In the nine-hole division, Malcolm Fox had a 54, three strokes better than younger brother Holden Fox and Isabell Deak.

Little Leaguers on to state

The Stilly Valley Little League junior baseball team defeated Lake Stevens 17-6 on July 8 to win the District 1 title and a spot in the state tournament, which begins July 20 at Medical Lake High School.

The team includes Mason Bergley, Tristan Sheward, Branden Perdue, Michael Barene, Avery Kindred, Chase Lindsay, Nick Maranville, Zane Blanken, Casey Turner, Colby Buechel, Isaiah Mitzelfeldt, Collin Ueltschi, Luke Davis and Kendon Breekveldt. The manager is Doug Kindred and the coaches are John Ueltschi, Scott Maranville and Bob Bergley.
