The Medicine Hat Tigers recently became the second WHL team to clinch a playoff spot, joining league-leading Regina.
What do those two teams have in common? Both lost to the Everett Silvertips, who are back in action tonight against a Prince Albert squad that is playing much better of late. The Raiders have won seven of their last 11 games after winning just eight of their first 47 contests this season.
Our friends over at Dub Network almost always have some interesting statistics pieces and the last few days are no exception. Remember when the Tips seemed to be struggling at even strength? Turns out they’re actually eighth in the league. It’s also worth noting that nearly all of Everett’s goals in the past 12 games have come at even strength.
The Tips also boast the league’s top penalty kill and that’s the main reason they’re third overall on special teams. They’d likely be second to Regina if their power play hadn’t recently run into a dry spell. In fact if I did the math correctly, the Tips are just 2-for-46 on the man advantage in their past dozen games. Nevertheless Everett remains ninth overall on the power play at 21.1 percent.
