EDMONTON — The Everett Silvertips saw their Central Division road trip take a frustrating turn during a Sunday matinee.
The Edmonton Oil Kings scored three times in the opening period and Everett never threatened in a 5-1 loss before 5,098 fans at Rogers Place.
Everett (3-4-0, six points) was coming off a 1-0 shutout victory at Calgary on Friday. Edmonton improved to 3-4 with six points.
Trey Fix-Wolansky scored two goals and added an assist, and Tomas Soustal tallied three assists to lead the Oil Kings offense.
Edmonton took a 3-0 lead into the final period. It took former Silvertips Brett Kemp just 1:28 into the third to push the Oil Kings’ lead to 4-0. That was it for Everett goaltender Dorrin Luding who was lifted for Kyle Dumba. It was Dumba’s first appearance for the Tips after he signed with the team early last week.
Kevin Davis broke up the shutout at 11:07 when he buried a rebound of a Connor Dewar shot to make it 4-1, but the Oil Kings stretched the lead back to four when Fix-Wolansky scored his second goal of the game during a 5-on-3 power play.
The Oil Kings took a commanding three-goal lead in the opening period. Conner McDonald sneaked one by Luding at 8:12 in the first period. Tyson Gruninger and Liam Keeler had assists.
Fix-Wolansky pushed it to 2-0 at 9:09 on a one-timer with an assist from Tomas Soustal. It was the first point Soustal has tallied for Edmonton since coming over in a trade from the Kelowna Rockets last week.
Soustal and Fix-Wolansky then assisted Davis Koch who stashed the puck by Luding at the left post at 14:57 in the first period as the lead swelled to 3-0.
It remained 3-0 through the second period as the teams headed to the third tied in shots at 17-17.
Luding finished with 15 saves on 19 shots. Dumba saved seven of the eight shots he faced.
Everett continues its current nine-game road trip Tuesday when it takes on the Red Deer Rebels at 6 p.m.
