You could pick a major argument with a lot of people over the question, what’s the most consistent salmon-producing spot in the San Juan Islands? A case could certainly be made for Thatcher Pass. Close to the Washington Park launch, easy to find and to fish, the pass puts out salmon of various species pretty much throughout the season.
And it was once again a hot spot over the Fourth of July weekend, particularly on the first two days of the new season. Stuart Forst at Holiday Sports in Burlington said a 36-pounder was reported from Thatcher, as well as several other nice fish in the 17- to 20-pound range. Troll blue herring fairly tight to the south, Decatur Island, side of the pass, watching the sounder for the one shoal, halfway through the slot, which juts out from the island.
