The Game
The Everett Silvertips continued to stun WHL audiences with their hot start as they held on to beat Seattle 3-2 for their fourth straight win. The Tips are now 8-1-1-0 for their best start in a decade.
Riley Sutter had two more power play goals and is showing flashes of the potential the coaching staff saw in him during limited action last season.
Everett also got a goal from Bryce Kindopp and build a 3-0 lead in the first period. The Tips were never really threatened until the final two minutes when the Thunderbirds used an extra skater to cut the lead to 3-2. Everett held on for the final minute-and-a-half for the win.
The Tips are a banged-up bunch, and that’s what makes this four-game winning streak all the more impressive. Mackenzie Dwyer, normally a defenseman, skating on the fourth line tonight. Dwyer also played some forward last year. In fact, he was playing the position when he tore his ACL in January.
It doesn’t sound like any of the injured players will be out long term. Matt Fonteyne (shoulder) and Lucas Skrumeda (upper body) eached missed their third straight game, while Brian King (lower body) was scratched for Saturday’s game. Eetu Tuulola, who has been out with a shoulder injury for the past two weeks, is expected back soon.
The Tips have Sunday off and will skate Monday before heading to Spokane for a game Tuesday against the Chiefs.
The Turning Point
Carter Hart came up with several impressive saves during a Seattle power play five minutes into the third period. That kept the score 3-1 and it proved critical when Turner Ottenbreit scored with less than two minutes to go to pull the T-Birds within one.
Three Stars
1. Everett F Riley Sutter: The second-year forward scored twice for the Tips.
2. Everett G Carter Hart: The 18-year-old netminder had 23 saves on 25 shots to earn the win.
3. Everett F Connor Dewar: The 17-year-old jumped up to the first line in the absence of Fonteyne and had an assist.
Honorable mention: Seattle F Turner Ottenbreit (one goal, one assist).
