The Game
There weren’t a whole lot of highlights as the Tips lost in regulation for just the second time this season. Leading scorer Patrick Bajkov continued his hot start with Everett’s lone goal and linemate Dominic Zwerger assisted to run his point streak to eight games.
This isn’t necessarily unexpected, however. The Tips are in the midst of playing six of seven on the road and in a stretch that includes six games in nine days. It doesn’t get easier as they have to travel the five hours to Kelowna for a game Wednesday.
Everett is also banged up. Forwards Matt Fonteyne, Eetu Tuulola and Devon Skoleski are all on the trip, meaning they could be return imminently. All are listed as day-to-day on the WHL injury report. However, the Tips are also missing forward Brian King and defenseman Lucas Skrumeda. King is listed as week-to-week, while Skrumeda isn’t mentioned on the weekly report.
Spokane goalie Dawson Weatherill was simply too good tonight as he held strong even in the final minutes. Spokane native Kailer Yamamoto also continued his torrid pace as he looks to impress NHL scouts in his draft year. He has either scored or assisted on all five Spokane goals in the Chiefs’ two games against Everett this season.
The Turning Point
The Tips pulled goaltender Carter Hart with two minutes to play, but Weatherill proved unflappable by holding the Tips at bay.
Three Stars
1. Spokane F Kailer Yamamoto: The Spokane native had a goal and an assist and finished plus-two.
2. Spokane G Dawson Weatherill: The rookie netminder had 26 saves to earn the win.
3. Everett F Patrick Bajkov: The first-line forward scored Everett’s only goal.
