Sox rally falls short

EUGENE, Ore. — The Everett AquaSox scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning, but their rally fell short and they lost 10-9 to Eugene on Thursday night, ending their winning streak at two.

Everett quickly dug itself a big hole in the bottom of the first inning when starting pitcher Luiz Gohara gave up five runs on three home runs. .

Everett put the tying run at the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth after a bases-clearing double by Kristian Brito against Eugene reliever Cory Bostjancic. The next batter, James Alfonso, drove in Brito with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.

The rally ended there. Reliever Bryan Verbitsky replaced Bostjancic and got Wilton Martinez to popout to center fielder Austin Bousfield for the game’s final out. Bostjanic allowed two runs with one out on a bases loaded walk and hit batter.

In their first at-bat, the Emeralds took a 2-0 lead when Bousfield and Franchy Cordero, their first two hitters, belted back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Jalen Goree extended the Emeralds’ lead to 5-0 on a three-run blast over the center-field fence.

The Aquasox never recovered.
