Still time for Silvertips to salvage road trip

Everett is 1-2 on its swing through the Central Division

The Everett Silvertips suffered a tough 5-1 loss in Edmonton Sunday afternoon to fall to 1-2 on their current road trip and 3-4 on the season.

The good news is that four games still remain on their biennial swing through the Central Division, so there is ample time to salvage the road trip before the Tips return home for an Oct. 18 match-up with the Tri-City Americans.

Everett has scored just once in each of the last two games — both times by defenseman Kevin Davis in the final period — after averaging a shade under four goals per game through their first five contests. That includes four games with four goals and a shootout win at Kelowna during which the Tips scored three times in regulation.

The good news of the past two games? They’re 1-1 in the contests thanks to Dorrin Luding’s first career shutout last Friday in Calgary. The bad news is that Luding gave up four in Edmonton before he was pulled in the third period. That led to the debut of Kyle Dumba, whom the Tips signed early last week with the news that Carter Hart will be out with mononucleosis. Meanwhile, 16-year-old rookie goaltender Dustin Wolf continues to recover from offseason hip surgery — though he could be back by the end of the month.

Everett hasn’t lacked for chances in the past two games. The Tips had 33 shots in the win over Calgary and 23 in the loss at Edmonton. While the 23 shots ties a season-low, the Tips won at Kelowna with the same number.

Patrick Bajkov continues to lead the Tips in scoring with two goals and 10 assists. Connor Dewar (five goals, five assists) and Matt Fonteyne (five goals, four assists) are right behind. Davis checks in with a pair of goals and five assists, while Riley Sutter has four goals.

On Tuesday night the Tips are in Red Deer at 6 p.m. to take on the Rebels (3-3-0, six points) who have lost three straight. The Rebels are coached by Brent Sutter, the uncle of Everett’s Riley.

Mason McCarty leads the Rebels in goals (five) and scoring (10). Grayson Pawlenchuk has four goals and two assists, while Brandon Hagel has three goals and five assists. Reese Johnson also has three goals.

Lasse Petersen, briefly a Silvertip last season before being traded to Red Deer, has appeared in five games at goaltender for the Rebels. He has a 3-2 record with a 4.14 goals-against average and an .870 save percentage. Rookie Ethan Anders is 0-1 with a 3.37 GAA and an .889 save percentage.

Wednesday the Tips take on the Medicine Hat Tigers (3-3-0, six points). The Tigers are coming off a 6-1 dismantling at home by the Prince Albert Raiders.

Mark Rassell has six goals and two assists, while David Quenneville has eight assists to pace the Tigers. Max Gerlach has four goals and three assists.

The Tips play at Lethbridge Friday and against the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, British Columbia on Saturday before returning home.
