PORTLAND, Ore. — The Everett Silvertips hit a new low Wednesday night.
Everett suffered its worst defeat of the season, getting thrashed by the Portland Winterhawks 8-1.
The seven-goal defeat was by far Everett’s worst of the season, as the Tips hadn’t lost by more than four previously. The loss was also Everett’s fifth straight.
Paul Bittner had two goals and two assists to lead Portland (34-12-2-3), which swept the three-meetings-in-six days with the Tips, outscoring Everett 19-4 in the process. Chase De Leo, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Brendan Leipsic, Nicolas Petan, Ethan Price and Dominic Turgeon scored the other goals for the Winterhawks, while Corbin Boes earned the win in goal with 27 saves.
Patrick Bajkov scored the lone goal for Everett (25-18-7-1). Austin Lotz gave up seven goals on 27 shots before being hooked midway through the second period. Daniel Cotton stopped nine of 10 in relief.
Portland didn’t waste any time getting the rout started as the Winterhawks needed just 1 minute, 15 seconds to get on the board. The Winterhawks kept the puck in the Everett zone for an extended period, with Bittner eventually converting to give Portland an early 1-0 lead.
Everett tied it on the power play at 5:25 to briefly get back in it. Carson Stadnyk sent a back-door feed to Bajkov, and Bajkov scored on the second attempt to make it 1-1.
But Portland dominated the remainder of the period and scored twice more to go ahead 3-1. Bittner was credited with his second of the game at 13:20 when a loose puck bounced past Lotz. Then De Leo scored on his own rebound at 16:07.
Then it all fell apart for Everett in the second. The Tips began the period on the power play, but penalties nine seconds apart not only ended the power play, but led to a Portland five-on-three. Bjorkstrand converted when the puck squirted free from under Lotz, making it 4-1.
The Winterhawks then piled on with three more goals in five minutes. Leipsic scored at 7:35 when he stole the puck and went coast to coast. Petan scored at 10:47 on a back-door feed from Bittner. Then Price scored off the rush at 12:09, sending Lotz to the bench in favor of Cotton. Portland then salted away the rest of the game.
