“Environmental Still Life,” photographs by Jacob Smithers, is on display through Sept. 7 at the ArtsNow gallery at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave. N, Edmonds.
A free reception will be 5-8 p.m. July 19 at the conference center during Edmonds’ Third Thursday Art Walk. Cascadia Big Band will provide live post-swing era music in the Chrysanthemum Hall with room for dancing. Refreshments will be available.
Smithers was born in the Seattle area, majored in environmental science at Seattle University, and studied under Photographic Center Northwest and Seattle University’s Claire Garoutte. He continues to work with several nonprofits, harmonizing his love for photography and community.

Bluegrass fest in MLT
The first Bluegrass on the Green, a two-day open air festival with top-notch bluegrass music, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 4 and 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Nile Country Club and Golf Course, 6601 244th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace.
Headlining the event is the Northwest’s own Northern Departure; 10 additional bands from Washington, Oregon and California also will perform.
A weekend pass is $35, Saturday only is $25 and Sunday only is $15. Tickets are available through www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling 800-838-3006. Tickets also are available at the door.

Arts Commission hosts photo contest
The Snohomish County Arts Commission seeks original photo-based submissions for its 2012 Snohomish County Photography Contest.
The photo entries that best respond to the theme of “play” will be selected for a group exhibit. A purchase prize of $1,000 dollars will be awarded to one photographer.
The deadline for submissions is Sept. 10. A group exhibit is scheduled for Oct. 1 to Nov. 1 at the Snohomish County Campus, with an artist reception to be held Oct. 5.
There is a $25 entry fee, which allows each artist to submit up to three images.

Seattle choruses announce seasons
Seattle Women’s Chorus kicks off its 2012-13 season with its fall concert, “How Sweet the Sound,” Oct. 12-20 in Saint Mark’s Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave. E, Seattle. They will perform classic French pieces from Ravel, Faure and Delibes, along with contemporary works.
In 2013, SWC welcomes special guest and Tacoma native Vicci Martinez for its 10th anniversary concert, “Celebrate!,” for one night only on Feb. 8. Together with SWC, this popular finalist from the TV show “The Voice” will honor many of the great female icons of the music industry.
For their 33rd season opener, Seattle Men’s Chorus whisks audiences away on a journey through the tropics this holiday season with “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” Nov. 20-Dec. 22, along with all the songs, dance and campy comedy audiences have come to enjoy from Seattle’s other holiday tradition.
In April, SMC welcomes back special guest Leslie Jordan for an ABBA-filled “mash up” of comedy and music in its spring concert, “Dancing Queen,” April 6-7, 2013. In June, the season comes to a close when SMC collaborates with The 5th Avenue Theatre on a concert version of a musical favorite, “Hairspray,” June 20-23, 2013.
