Paintings by Spokane artist Kathleen Cavender are on display through mid-September at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds.
Cavender is a fourth-generation professional artist; her great-grandfather supported a family of 12 with his art at the turn of the century in London. His sketchbook became her inspiration throughout her childhood.
Celeste Douville exhibit in Lynnwood
Celeste Douville, a mixed-media artist and teacher of more than 20 years, is the featured artist through Sept. 24 at the Lynnwood Library Gallery, 19200 44th Ave. W.
Douville is an art instructor at Schack Art Center in Everett. She is both intrigued and inspired by circles and quotations, which resonate throughout her colorful art.
Youth orchestra holding auditions
Everett Youth Symphony Orchestras is holding auditions for its four orchestras Aug. 23-25 at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church, 4514 84th St. SW, Mukilteo.
All musicians up to age 21 are eligible to join.

EYSO has openings for all orchestra instruments. Auditions will include positions for principal piano and principal harp.
Village Theatre launches Season with ‘Big River’
Village Theatre will open its 2012-13 season with “Big River,” a Tony Award-winning musical known for its powerful bluegrass/country score.
The musical is based on Mark Twain’s classic 1884 novel, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Fearful of Pap’s drunken rage, Huck fakes his own death and hightails it to the river to help his friend Jim escape slavery.
“Big River” runs Oct. 26-Nov. 18 in Everett. Tickets go on sale Sept. 19.
