Veterans and community members gathered across Snohomish County on May 28 to celebrate the service and lives of fallen servicemen and women.
In Edmonds, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony was held at the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery and Columbarium.
Scheduled to take part in the ceremony were cemetery board member Dale Hoggins; U.S. Navy veteran Ervin Schmidt with Edmonds-Woodway High School senior Blaise Lamb; American Legion Post 66, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870, Explorer Post 734, Girl Scout Troop 42093, Cub Pack 331 and the Washington National Guard; Mayor Dave Earling; Edmonds-Woodway senior Katarina Nguyen; and the Edmonds-Woodway Vocal Volunteers and brass quintet.
Elsewhere in South County, the city of Lynnwood held a ceremony at Veterans Park. The ceremony was to feature the Northwest Junior Pipe Band, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 and the American Legion Post 37, country recording artist Garret Lloyd King and guest speaker retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Joseph S. Jimenez. Boy Scouts Troop 49 placed the flags in the park and distributed programs.
Meanwhile, for the past eight years, Edmonds artist Michael Reagan has sketched free portraits of U.S. service members who have lost their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the wars against terrorism.
Motivated by a desire to ensure those sacrifices have not been forgotten, Reagan has now completed more than 2,900 portraits for his Fallen Heroes Project. He has compiled many of them into posters he gives away around the country to people who will put them on display.
“These posters show the human cost of war on a large scale,” Reagan writes. Each image “is a loss that is immeasurable, especially for each family.”
