Still time to ‘Celebrate Schools’ with walk

The Edmonds Public Schools Foundation will hold its Celebrate Schools 5k run/walk on Oct. 13 at the Alderwood mall. The annual fundraiser was formerly known as Street Strut. Register online or donate at www.edmondspsf.org.

Spruce Elementary recognized by state

State Superintendent Randy Dorn recently designated Spruce Elementary School as one of 58 high-progress Title I schools across the state.

A high-progress “Reward School” is a school that posts reading and math scores in the top 10 percent of schools that receive federal Title I dollars for serving a high population of low-income families. The designation recognizes the school’s overall achievement from the 2008-09 to 2010-11 school years.

“Schools identified as Reward Schools have been doing the work that it takes to make a difference for students. School staff, students, parents and communities should be proud to join this distinguished group,” Dorn said in a statement.

Jazz Colony students play last summer gig

The Edmonds-Woodway High School Jazz Colony will perform its final gig (weather permitting) of the season from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 29 at “Sea Jazz” outside Anthony’s HomePort, 456 Admiral Way, Edmonds.

Jazz Colony is a group of E-W jazz students who meet all summer, midweek, to practice their jazz skills, jam and play a few gigs as well. This is the third year of the group, and enrollment was up to 36 jazz musicians.

Jazz Colony sessions are orchestrated by lead clinician Steve Treseler; assisting him this summer were other local jazz clinicians, Dan Taylor, Jim Sisko and John Sanders. The program is coordinated by Peter Bennett and Jake Bergevin, with several parents helping as well.

“Sea Jazz” is a new local, twice-weekly summer performance venue sponsored by the Port of Edmonds, Seattle Teen Music and Anthony’s HomePort.

Swap books, clothes – and costumes

The Mountlake Terrace Library will hold a back-to-school resource fair and book, clothing and costume swap from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 15.

Families are invited to connect with each other, learn about resources – such as homework, tutoring, parks programs and more – and take part in a free exchange of books and clothing.

Bring in unwanted, clean clothing and books in good condition. There also will be a costume corner, where you can recycle both children’s and adult costumes. Pick up some new to you items. The leftovers will be donated to the Friends of the Library and community charities.

The library is at 23300 58th Ave. W, Mountlake Terrace. For more information, call Dawn at 425-776-8722.

Students swap visits in Hekinan, Edmonds

A group of three Edmonds students visited Edmonds’ Sister City, Hekinan, in August, then served as hosts for a group of 10 middle-school students from the Japanese city later that month.

The exchange was part of the city’s Sister City collaboration.

Nicole Montgomery, of Lynnwood High School, and Nathan Hollcraft and Jack Lanning, of Meadowdale High School, toured Japan with their chaperone Jill Van Berkom, a photography teacher at Meadowdale.

Photos of their visit, as well as those of the Japanese students’ visit, are posted on the Edmonds Sister City Commission’s Facebook page.
