STANWOOD — Solarize Stanwood/Camano holds its third of four free public workshops at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Stanwood High School Auditorium, 7400 272nd St. NW, Stanwood.
Attendees will learn how well solar works in Northwest Washington, get a complete description the various incentives, which, when added up, amount to a 50 percent discount off the regular price, and Snohomish County PUD explains net-metering and the production meter. The two solar installation firms selected by the community, Fire Mountain Solar of Mount Vernon and Whidbey Sun and Wind, describe the solar panel options and explain the return on investment.
Attendance at a workshop puts participants on the fast-track to a free site assessment. Following the 90-minute presentation, participants will take a field trip outdoors to see the pole-mounted solar panels, funded by Snohomish PUD’s Planet Power Program, that generate electricity used by the school’s environmental science program.
Many people are quite surprised to see how quickly the incentives can help recoup the cost of a solar system. And, with the Snohomish County PUD low-interest loan, the upfront cost can be significantly reduced. People who have attended past workshops are invited back to this one to ask further questions of the installers and to see the school’s panels.
The last day to start the process by registering at www.SolarizeWA.org is May 25 for the final workshop on June 7.
“The best time to make the decision to go solar is now, before this coming summer’s many hours of sunshine and in time to take maximum advantage of State of Washington incentives,” said Joan Schrammeck, chair of the Solarize outreach committee and program participant who has signed a contract for solar panels for the roof of her garage.
