MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – A man died Friday afternoon after he was reportedly hit by a pickup truck while trying to run across northbound I-5.
Witnesses told Washington State Patrol troopers the man walked across the two right lanes and darted across the third, State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said.
The man was struck by a Ford pickup truck in the carpool lane. The driver and a woman and small child, who also were in the pickup, were not hurt, Leary said.
A bystander attempted to revive the man. Emergency crews took over the efforts, but the man died at the scene, Leary said.
It wasn’t clear why the man was running across the freeway during rush-hour traffic.
“That’s the million-dollar question,” Leary said.
The man’s name wasn’t known Friday. He didn’t have any identification on him.
The accident backed up traffic for miles during the evening commute.
Lake Stevens: New playground opens
A new picnic shelter and playground at the Machias Trailhead on the Centennial Trail is scheduled to be dedicated at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Financing for the $150,000 project came from a more than $50 million county bond sale last year.
County Executive Aaron Reardon plans to dedicate the improvements. The Machias Trailhead is located at 1600 Virginia St., Snohomish.
