Baby bottle brouhaha: How bad is bisphenol A?

I tried to answer this question in a health story earlier this week, but I found only seriously conflicting views during my reporting.

The FDA says bisphenol A can leach out of food-grade polycarbonate plastic, but not in amounts that should make anyone worried.

The Envrionmental Working Groups says to avoid polycarbonate altogether.

I spoke with a Mill Creek doctor who said parents shouldn’t replace their existing bottles, but they should avoid heating plastic baby bottles in the microwave. I found a Mukilteo mom who is weaning her family of plastics in part because of concerns, however inconclusive, about bisphenol A.
