STANWOOD — Another day, another pair of wins for Stanwood’s Kyle Koetje.
The No. 1 seeded player in the 4A District 1 tennis tournament defeated Bryan Yang of Kamiak 6-1, 6-1 in the first round match, and Mike Stepenski of Edmonds-Woodway 6-0, 6-1 in the second round match at Stanwood High School on Wednesday.
Koetje was perfect 3-0 in the Wesco North 4A tournament last week, and looks to continue his dominance in the District tournament.
“I was real impressed with Kyle today,” Stanwood head coach Trudi Abrams said. “He was just real focused and in control of the game … Kyle has really matured as a tennis player these last couple years.”
Tournament director Ron Shanander also complemented Koetje and the other singles finalist, Michael Chamerski of Jackson, who will play for the district championship today at 3 p.m.
“Both of those singles guys in the finals are playing great,” Shanander said.
“(Today’s) match is gonna be a good match,” Abrams noted. Either way, Koetje “knows he’s going to state.”
Another fast riser in the tournament is the No. 4 doubles team of Ryan Warren and Ian Southcote-Want of Edmonds-Woodway, who won two close upsets on Wednesday and guaranteed themselves a state berth.
“They’ve done real well,” Shanander said of the Warriors’ duo. “Coming in and beating the No. 1 team and then the No. 2 team. They’re going to state … and they play quality tennis too.”
The last bit of drama came during the final match of the day. In the consolation bracket, the two Cascade doubles teams of Ysmael Abad-Garrett Johnson and Jon Pham-Brenden Beaver found themselves playing each other, with Pham and Beaver coming from behind to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
“That’s one of those things that sometimes happens,” Shanander said. “You say ‘Gosh, we’re gonna get a winner, but we’re gonna get a loser too.’ They did play a good match.”
Shanander was excited about crowning winners today, proclaiming “we’re gonna play (today) rain or shine.
“It’s just been fun watching good, quality kids. These kids are the best around.
“It’s just been a really enjoyable tournament so far.”

3A District 1 meet: At Mt. Vernon, the Western Conference was 5-1 against the Northwest Conference Wednesday in the opening round of the 3A District 1 Tennis Tournament. Top-seeded singles player Scott Bohmke of Meadowdale defeated Justin Ansdell 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, top seeds Devin Abney and Danny Brzovic of Shorecrest defeated Christopher Johnson and Andrew Olsen of Meadowdale 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Girls soccer
Friday Harbor 4, Coupeville 2: At Coupeville, Whitney Parter scored all four of Friday Harbor’s goals unassisted in the 1A District 1 playoff victory. Lexi Hemphill and Courtney Boyd scored for Coupeville (2-15 overall). The goalkeepers were not reported for either school.
South Whidbey 3, Anacortes 1: At Anacortes, South Whidbey defeated Anacortes in a play-in game to earn a seed in the 2A District 1 playoffs. Karissa Thomas had two goals and an assist for South Whidbey, and teammate Liz Adams scored a goal. Jesse Olson scored on a header for Anacortes. Natasha Camps kept goal for South Whidbey and Alex Wygant was Anacortes’ keeper.
Volleyball
Snohomish 3, Oak Harbor 0: At Snohomish, Shayla McCaffery led Snohomish with seven kills in the 25-19, 25-12, 25-14 victory over Oak Harbor Wednesday. Larissa Dirks had six kills for Snohomish (6-1 league, 11-2 overall). Jennifer Jansen had 10 kills and two blocks for Oak Harbor (1-6, 3-10) and teammate Marissa Sutherland had four blocks.
Cedarcrest 3, Lakewood 0: At Duvall, Shannon Bailey had 12 kills and five aces and Lauren LaBrosse had 10 assists and three aces to lead Cedarcrest to the 25-15, 25-14, 25-15 Cascade Conference win. Krystal Canady had 17 digs and Jessica Knoth added five kills for the Red Wolves (8-5 in league, 9-5 overall). Statistics for Lakewood (5-8 in league and overall) were not reported.
Granite Falls 3, Sultan 0: At Granite Falls, Audrey Murphy had 17 kills and three blocks in the 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 Cascade Conference victory over Sultan. Shelby Spencer had 21 assists and Brennan Johnson had 15 digs.
South Whidbey 3, Coupeville 1: At Langley, Allison Wood had 18 kills and 16 digs for South Whidbey in its 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Coupeville. Katie Holt contributed nine kills, setter Kelsey Dorpat had 29 assists and Lindsey Newman had eight kills and 15 digs for South Whidbey (7-5 league and overall). Linde Maertens had 21 kills for Coupeville (4-10, 5-10) and teammate Kyra Ilyankoff had seven kills and four blocks.
