LYNNWOOD – A candle is being blamed for sparking an apartment fire late Thursday in Lynnwood, causing $20,000 damage and displacing the man who lived there.
Crews were called around 11:30 p.m. to the Silverwood Apartments in the 4100 block of 156th Street SW, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing out of one of the units. They located a man who lived the apartment and helped him to safety, she said.
The fire, which was contained to a bedroom, was quickly extinguished. No one was hurt but the blaze left the apartment uninhabitable.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office investigated and determined the fire was started by a candle left unattended on a cardboard box.
“It’s important to exercise caution when using candles,” Hynes said. “This candle had been burning on top of the box with no holder or base to prevent it from igniting the cardboard box when it melted down.”
The Snohomish County Red Cross responded to help the displaced man.
