Prep boys basketball roundup

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway was forced to make a defensive switch when Shorewood’s Micah Mitchell dropped 13 points on E-W in the first half of Friday’s Wesco South boys basketball game.

It didn’t have any effect on Mitchell, who went on to torch the Warriors for 22 points in the second half and allow Shorewood to keep its slim hope alive of reaching the district playoffs.

“The game really started and ended with him,” E-W assistant coach Jason Courter said, as E-W threw every possible defensive look to slow him down in the second half. “We just couldn’t contain him.”

Mitchell ended the game with eight 3-pointers and all but made up for 13 Shorewood turnovers.

“They were just going to Mitchell all the time,” Courter said. “I mean he stuck three 3-pointers in the third quarter.”

Shorewood’s Tomas Sanchez added to the offensive attack with 21 points.

With the win, Shorewood improved to 3-13 and 4-14. E-W fell to 4-12, 5-13.

This game was important for Shorewood, because if E-W finishes with the same record as Shorewood, there would a playoff game between the two for the district play-in game.

“We were hoping to build on our win against Terrace,” Courter said, referring to the upset that the Warriors handed first place Mountlake Terrace less than a week ago, “but it is tough to end another team’s season.”
