EVERETT — The Digital Bookmobile is a far cry from Pegasus, a modified Model T Ford that Everett Public Library rolled out as a book wagon in 1924.
This 18-wheel, souped-up big rig is equipped with onboard broadband Internet connections, six big-screen HDTVs, and 11 computer stations.
It’s scheduled to stop for two days in Everett next week as part of a national tour to spread the gospel of downloadable electronic books and audiobooks.
The truck is owned by OverDrive Inc., a major supplier of online audiobooks. It’s next scheduled stop after Everett is the Monroe Sno-Isle Libraries branch.
“We think it’s going to be just lots of fun,” said Liz Hawkins of Everett Public Library’s Evergreen Branch.
Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the library’s digital media collection and sample audio books from the library’s collection.
Hands-on demonstrations and personal tutorials will be offered to patrons of all ages during the visit.
Any time, anywhere, Everett Public Library cardholders can check out and download many digital audiobook titles.
Once downloaded onto a computer, audiobooks can be transferred to supported mobile devices, such as iPods. Many audio titles can also be burned to an audio CD. At the end of the 21-day lending period, titles automatically expire.
One of the biggest perks: There are never late fees or damaged items.
