Parris Rice of Snohomish won the Hunt Seat Equitation title Saturday at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show in Oklahoma City.
Rice won on her 11-year-old bay gelding, Javah Mon. Rice finished first in a field of 168 competitors.
Hunt seat equitation tests a rider’s poise and control. According to the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Web site, “emphasis is placed on ability to sit correctly, hold the correct riding posture and control the horse on a precise pattern.”
In all, the championships drew 2,474 competitors from the United States, Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The event is billed by the AQHA as the “largest, single-breed, youth world championship show” in the world.
Robinson captures silver
Katherine Robinson of Marysville won a silver medal as a member of the United States lightweight quad that finished second at the recent U23 Rowing World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.
Robinson is a recent graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. She was a four-year member of the school’s women’s rowing team and earned All-America honors this past spring.
Shock claims state crown
The Snohomish Shock Girls U-12 B fastpitch softball team won the ASA Washington State Championship last month in Vancouver. The victory qualified the Shock for the 58-team Western National Championships, which were held July 28-Aug. 2 in Clackamas County, Ore. The team went 2-2 at the Western Nationals, finishing in a tie for 25th place.
Members of the state-championship squad included Amanda Gustafson, Aurora Ellison, Bailey Seek, Jennie Winston, Kaitlyn Weilgus, Lauren Nicksic, Morgan Greenlee, Peyton Larson, Shayleh Shamrock, Rachel Thompson, Alexis James and Sage Andersen. The team was coached by Greg Winston.
Express wins championship
The Marysville-based Snohomish County Express 15U baseball team won the North Washington Babe Ruth Tournament on July 19 in Ellensburg. The Express posted a 5-0 record in the tourney.
The Express also placed second in the Mickey Mantle Olympic Division State Tournament. The team posted a 4-2 record, falling to the Kent Bulldogs in the championship game. Express players Jake Thomas, Ross Lyons, John Naff and Brandon Dormaier were named to the all-tournament team.
Other members of the team were Alex Koeplin, Blake Stober, Christian Gasca, Conner Eddy, Eric Thorvilson, Jeff Ness, Robert Baldridge, Sam Herzor, Tyler Parker and Zach Williams.
The team also included manager Steve Dormaier, head coach Mike Marzolf and assistant coaches Ric Stober and Jeff Thomas.
Lacrosse team third
The Snohomish girls lacrosse team placed third at the second annual Cascade Cup held earlier this month at Harvey Field in Snohomish. The tourney drew teams from Washington, Canada, Oregon and California.
Snohomish finished the tournament with a 5-2 record.
Attacker Meaghan Hess led Snohomish with 26 goals and 13 assists.
Santiago first at AJGA
Kimberly Santiago, 15, of Lynnwood won medalist honors at the American Junior Golf Association qualifier held last week at Wenatchee Golf &Country Club. Santiago shot a 3-over-par 75 to best a field of 24 girls. The victory earned her the right to play in this week’s AJGA event in Wenatchee, but she opted instead to accept an AJGA tournament exemption that she can use next year.
