PREP CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: Stanwood gets 1-2 finish to beat Shorewood by one

SNOHOMISH — Stanwood runners Minna Fields and Natasha Verma used a one-two finish to hold off Shorewood in a girls cross country meet Thursday afternoon at Valley View Middle School in Snohomish.

But it was Stanwood freshman Jordan Stephenson’s fifth-place finish (19:31) that gave the Spartans a crucial spot for a one-point win over the Thunderbirds (37 points). Snohomish placed third overall with 53 points.

“(Stephenson) is a real promising freshman,” Stanwood head coach Jordan Sneva said. “As long as she keeps working hard, she has the potential to pass them (Stanwood’s Fields, Verma and Jade Borseth) at the end of the year.

“That fifth place was a big one for us.”

The Spartans were racing without Borseth, who is one of their top returning runners. Borseth is out with an aggravated hip flexor and is on track to return next week. But Fields and Verma made up for her absence.

Fields, a junior and one of the top distance runners at the 2009 4A District 1 track and field meet (second-place finishes in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races), beat the field by seven seconds.

Verma, a senior, is also one of Stanwood’s strongest returning runners.

“Those three (Fields, Verma and Borseth) will be competing for the front spot,” Sneva said. “I would say Minna is probably the strongest out of them right now because of her work ethic.”

The difference-maker for Stanwood turned out to be Stephenson, whose fifth-place time — with a cushion of six seconds over Shorewood’s Charlee Linton in sixth place — provided the one-point margin of victory for the Spartans.

“It (the race) was really tight, we didn’t know (the close result) until the end of the race,” Sneva said.
