PREP BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Fourth-quarter defense helps Stanwood nip Snohomish

STANWOOD — Facing a deficit at home in the fourth quarter can test a team’s character.

For the Stanwood boys basketball team, a renewed dedication to defense helped the Spartans rally for a 63-60 Wesco North victory over Snohomish.

Behind 49-46 entering the fourth quarter, Stanwood held Snohomish to 11 points and five field goals the rest of the way.

“We didn’t play very good defense in the second and third quarter,” Stanwood head coach Zach Ward said of his team. “Giving up 19- and 20-point quarters, … but we cranked it down (in the fourth).”

Ward credited senior guard Austin Cook (six points) with making two key free throws that pushed Stanwood’s advantage to 63-60 with five seconds remaining in the game.

Zack Johnson scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Stanwood and Kale Schmidt added 13 points.

Snohomish was led by Blane Ortiz (19 points) and post Jonathan McGee (15 points).

“They were tough,” Ward said, crediting Ortiz, a senior guard, and McGee, a senior center. “They had a tough inside-ouside combo.”
