PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Marysville-Pilchuck combines balanced scoring with stingy defense

MARYSVILLE — For head coach Julie Martin, this was the style of game she wanted all season.

The Marysville-Pilchuck girls basketball team put together a complete game — eight different players scoring and a stifling defense to match — in a 59-39 Wesco North win Friday night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

With the M-P (11-2 league, 13-4 overall) win and a loss by Oak Harbor, M-P clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth. Arlington fell to 6-6, 9-7, fifth place in the Wesco North.

Tomahawk junior Morgan Martinis hit four 3-pointers, and led with a game-high 19 points, and Emily Enberg was the only other double-digit factor for M-P with 13 points.

“We worked and moved off the ball tonight really well,” M-P head coach Julie Martin said, insisting that the Tomahawks’ overall effectiveness came from its movement away from the ball. “It was pretty balanced scoring wise.”

The Tomahawks defense matched what the offense had to offer, holding Arlington to single-digit quarters in the second half, outscoring Arlington 31-14.

“When you sit back and look to see we are in control of our own destiny, the girls really want it,” Martin said, “but we have a big target on our back of course. I feel like the girls like that.”
