Boys basketball roundup: Kaska’s hot shooting leads Lake Stevens past Cascade 69-64

EVERETT — The Cascade boys basketball team went cold and Lake Stevens’ Shane Kaska heated up as the Bruins squandered an eight-point lead and the Vikings captured a 69-64 Western Conference North Division win Tuesday night at Cascade High School.

The Bruins (9-4 league, 11-6 overall), who are battling for a district playoff spot, shot 2 of 14 from the field in a frigid fourth quarter.

Kaska finished with 33 points, including five 3-pointers, for Lake Stevens (12-1, 14-4).

“Kaska really came through down the stretch,” Cascade head coach Jamar Williams said. “ … They hit the boards pretty well on the offensive end, there were several trips where we (Cascade) were one shot and out.”

Chris McGrath scored 17 points and had six rebounds and two steals for Cascade as the Bruins overcame 10 first-half turnovers.

“We were able to battle through (the turnovers) and still be able to be down three at the half,” Williams said. “… We just went cold there in the fourth.”

Jarett Hanson added nine points for the Vikings and Arvid Isaksen, Aaron Maw and Chris Finley had seven apiece.

Cascade is in a battle with Snohomish for the third and fourth places to the district tournament with Arlington lurking in fifth.

The Bruins face Arlington on Friday.

“I definitely want our guys to take the lessons out of this loss and the guys need to refocus in on Arlington on Friday,” Williams said.

But Shorecrest’s Isaiah Clevenger was able to drive the length of the court and bury a jump-shot from the free throw line with two seconds remaining that proved to be the game winner.
