Prep Baseball Roundup: Kamiak opens with a 2-1 win

MUKILTEO — Andrew Groves opened the Kamiak baseball season with a bang on the way to a 2-1 nonleague victory over Lakeside at Geiger field Monday.

The senior pitcher gave up just one run before being replaced in the fifth inning and assured himself of his first win of the season when he roped a two-out bases-loaded single in the fourth that plated two Knights.

“He’s our ace,” Kamiak coach Steve Merkley said, “so every hit he gets is a bonus.”

The teams combined for eight hits on the day.

“Pitchers are usually ahead of the hitters this early,” Merkley said.

Before the game the Knights held a ceremony to honor former assistant coach Jim Geiger, who died three years ago from a sudden illness. Lakeside coach Dana Papsedero coached with Geiger during summer league and he and Merkley agreed to honor Geiger’s memory every year as long as they coach their respective teams.

“We think of him every day,” Merkley said. “He was there every day. He really cared about the kids.”

Geiger’s son Chris is now an assistant with the Knights and his sister Kelli and mother Toni threw out the first pitch. Geiger’s jersey is retired in the outfield and the Knights wear his number on their hats.

“As long as Chris and I keep coaching, we’ll keep passing (the tradition) down,” Merkley said.
