MONROE — Police detained seven teenagers Thursday after they allegedly set off backyard bombs made out of household cleaners and other ingredients.
The suspects, all 16 and 17 from Monroe and Snohomish, told police they were imitating YouTube videos. They made the bombs and threw them into a yard on the 17500 block of 157th Place SE. Police were in the area investigating reports of fireworks being used. They saw the teens toss the bombs and witnessed the explosions.
Police detained the teens while taking their statements, but they weren’t arrested, police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.
The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office. No injuries were reported. Manufacturing, using or possessing explosives without a license is a felony in Washington state.
