LYNNWOOD — A smoke alarm alerted two sisters to a fire in their home Saturday afternoon in the Alderwood Manor area east of Lynnwood.
The girls safely escaped the fire, which caused more than $60,000 damage to the two-story house in the 18900 block of 20th Place W.
The oldest girl, a teenager, reported the fire about 2 p.m. Smoke and flames were coming from the back of the house when firefighters arrived, said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1. Firefighters from Fire District 1 and the Lynnwood Fire Department responded and quickly had the fire under control. No one was injured, Hynes said.
An investigation by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office determined the fire most likely started with a malfunctioning hair dryer in the master bathroom. The fire was contained to the master suite, but heavy smoke damaged most of the home’s second floor.
Support 7 and the Red Cross assisted the family of five displaced by the fire. The family owns the home and has insurance.
The girls were unaware of the fire until smoke alarm sounded, Hynes said.
“It gave them the warning they needed to get out safely,” Hynes said. “Smoke alarms can save lives, but only if they’re working and have fresh batteries.”
