MARYSVILLE — It’s a milestone year for the Marysville Strawberry Festival.
Events that are part of the city’s 80th Strawberry Festival began Thursday and are scheduled through Sunday. A new festival theme is chosen every year by Maryfest, the organization that produces the festival. This year’s theme is “Berrywood.”
“Since this year is our 80th anniversary I wanted to choose a theme that would be fun but elegant,” said Angie Miller, Maryfest president. “Berrywood allows us to showcase some photos from the past festivals on our float and help us celebrate our 80th anniversary in style.”
The fun includes a talent show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Musical entertainment and a market of craft and food booths are scheduled Friday through Sunday at Asbery Field. A carnival is also planned at the Marysville Middle School playfield.
The festival’s busiest day is Saturday and begins at 10 a.m. with a rose-planting ceremony at Totem Middle School. A rose will be planted to celebrate the festival’s 80th anniversary, Miller said.
A second rose will also be planted to honor the Marysville School District’s festival contributions.
The day also includes a car show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a strawberry shortcake eating contest from 1 to 3 p.m. at Asbery Field. Members of the royal court are expected to be part of the contest and challenge other, out of town festival royalty, Miller said.
This year’s Strawberry Festival Royal Court is Louie Vital, Erik Kundu and Lauren Stallcup of Marysville Getchell High School. Members of the Junior Royalty are Kennedy Doty, Sheridan Hedman and Denise Jacobsen.
“(The contest) is a fun family event where everyone can get involved, adults and kids alike,” Miller said.
On Saturday evening, a kids parade is scheduled to begin at 6 and the grand parade is planned to begin at 7:30 on State Avenue. A firework show is set to light up the skies at 10 p.m.
